Should Prostitution be legalized?
In Singapore and Denmark, having sex for money is legal and is done so in the open. In the United States it`s illegal in most states but legal in Nevada. In Malta, it is far from being considered and to this I strongly agree. Reasons mentioned to support prostitution Many people agree that prostitution should be legalized for various reasons. I`m going to list some of them and counter act on them. Reason no.1 Instead of ladies hanging out on the streets giving bad examples especially to children, a person could provide a safe, even friendly place to provide the service. Reason no.2 All the ladies would be protected from pimps who are beaten up because the requested money was not collected. Prostitutes will also be watched over from any other violence and drugs. Reason no.3 Strict control would be taken over sexual diseases. Legalization would require prostitutes to be medically examined on a regular basis. In the current situation, the rate of STD`s in our country is increasing dramatically causing serious, widespread health problems. Reason no.4 Unwanted pregnancies would be avoided. No more abortions and children put in institutions. Reason no.5 A woman can legally have sex with multiple partners, however, when it comes to charging her service, the act is illegalized. Many people think that this does not make sense at all. I agree that the reasons mentioned can ameliorate the situation both for prostitutes and society but I believe there is a better solution to this. The human body is something valuable and it shouldn`t be sold for any reasons. Ladies or girls who choose to be prostitutes have either low self-esteem or feel helpless about the situation. I believe that instead of legalizing prostitution, we should provide more support and education by empowering every human being who is at risk or else is already involved. Counseling and job opportunities can also reduce the number of prostitutes. Protection should also be given to the marginalized and the oppressed. Sexual education should be a priority in all schools. Once I met a twenty year old girl who shared her experience with me. At sixteen, she escaped from home. Her mother had died and she was living with her father and step mother whom she really disliked. She felt that her father was always siding his partner regardless the way she was treating her. After a lot of heavy arguments at home, her father threw her out. He said that he had done his job raising a kid and that he wanted to have his own life. This girl met a twenty-one year old guy and went living with him. He used to rent a cheap flat with his mate. He mislead her to think that he was a wonderful partner who was ready to offer her security, shelter and love. She had no idea that he was a pimp and a drug dealer. Things started to change when he told her that he couldn`t afford her financially and that she had to bring some good money home. He manipulated her with his acting. He pressured her that the only way to this was to go for prostitution. He was very nice in the beginning but his acting came to an end when he saw that she was not making Lm100 a day as expected. He started to beat her up heavily. She had no home, no friends and nowhere to go so she became totally dependent on him. Once she was so bruised that she could hardly be recognized. She ended up so thin and ugly. After two years of agony, she met a lady that offered her help. She went to live in an institution with legal protection since her pimp wouldn`t let go of her. She was given counseling and a lot of support. She found a job and started a new life leaving her horrible past behind. WHAT CAN LEAD TO PROSTUTION? Listed are some reasons amongst many others: Drug or any other abuse False love Poverty or lack of financial support Deprivation of love Desperation Low self-esteem Lack of coping skills Lack of assertiveness Lack of self-value and potentiality Lack of security and shelter Very sexually active-multiple partners Bad company No work available Bad up-bringing.
